Ingredients

Pasta
  • 1 pound Spaghetti or linguine
Sauce Base
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 4 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 28 ounce can Crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon Red pepper flakes Optional
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Or to taste
  • 1/4 cup Fresh basil, chopped

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Skillet

Method

  1. Cook the pasta in a large pot of salted boiling water according to package directions until al dente. Reserve about 1/2 cup of the pasta water before draining.
  2. While the pasta cooks, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant. Do not let the garlic brown.
  3. Pour in the crushed tomatoes. Stir in the dried oregano, red pepper flakes, and salt.
  4. Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Add the drained pasta directly to the skillet with the sauce. Toss to coat. If the sauce seems too thick, add a few tablespoons of the reserved pasta water until the sauce coats the pasta nicely.
  6. Stir in the fresh basil. Serve immediately.

Notes

You can add cooked ground meat or sautéed vegetables to the sauce base for variety.
