Method
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a standard 8x8 inch baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set this mixture aside.
- In a separate large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Add the vanilla extract to the wet ingredients.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix only until just combined; do not overmix.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
- Bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

You can top this cake with a simple dusting of powdered sugar or your preferred frosting once it has cooled.
