Total Time 1 hour
Servings: 8 servings
Course: Breakfast
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

For the Casserole
  • 8 slices bread stale or lightly toasted
  • 1 lb sausage cooked and crumbled
  • 1 cup shredded cheese cheddar or your favorite
For the Egg Mixture
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Large bowl
  • Whisk

Method

  1. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Tear or cut the bread slices into bite-sized pieces and spread them evenly in the bottom of the dish.
  2. Sprinkle the cooked sausage and shredded cheese over the bread.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread, sausage, and cheese. Gently press down to ensure the bread is soaking up the liquid.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or for at least 4 hours).
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the plastic wrap from the casserole.
  7. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the casserole is set and golden brown on top. Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

You can add other ingredients like cooked bacon, diced onions, bell peppers, or spinach. For a sweeter version, omit the sausage and cheese and add some fruit like berries or diced apples.
