Description

These sausage rolls feature a rich French onion filling wrapped in flaky pastry.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground pork sausage
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the sliced onion over medium heat until softened and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the ground pork sausage, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned. Drain off any excess fat.
  4. Add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme to the skillet. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Let the mixture cool slightly.
  5. Unfold the puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Divide each sheet in half lengthwise.
  6. Spoon the sausage and onion mixture evenly onto one half of each pastry strip.
  7. Brush the edges of the pastry with the beaten egg. Fold the other half of the pastry over the filling and press the edges to seal. Crimp with a fork.
  8. Cut each roll into desired lengths. Place the rolls on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Brush the tops of the rolls with the beaten egg. Cut a few small slits in the top of each roll to allow steam to escape.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a tablespoon of Dijon mustard to the sausage mixture.
  • If you prefer a crispier pastry, you can bake them for a few extra minutes.
