- 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup chopped onion
- 1/4 cup chopped celery
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup fried onions
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cook green beans until tender-crisp. Drain and set aside.
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and celery and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened.
- Stir in salt and pepper.
- Add the cooked green beans to the sauce and mix well.
- Pour the mixture into a baking dish.
- Top with fried onions.
- Bake for 20 minutes, or until bubbly and heated through.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can use half-and-half instead of milk.
- Add a pinch of nutmeg for an extra layer of flavor.
- If you prefer a creamier texture, add a bit more milk.
