Description

A simple and reliable recipe for classic Thanksgiving green beans.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped celery
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cook green beans until tender-crisp. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and celery and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  5. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  6. Stir in salt and pepper.
  7. Add the cooked green beans to the sauce and mix well.
  8. Pour the mixture into a baking dish.
  9. Top with fried onions.
  10. Bake for 20 minutes, or until bubbly and heated through.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can use half-and-half instead of milk.
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg for an extra layer of flavor.
  • If you prefer a creamier texture, add a bit more milk.
