Description

Savory meatballs infused with classic French onion soup flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup dry red wine
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup shredded Gruyere cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  3. Form the mixture into 1-inch meatballs.
  4. Melt butter in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook until softened and lightly browned, about 10-15 minutes.
  5. Add minced garlic and thyme to the skillet and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  6. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir to coat. Cook for 1 minute.
  7. Pour in the beef broth and red wine. Bring to a simmer, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  8. Arrange the meatballs in the skillet among the onions.
  9. Cover the skillet and transfer it to the preheated oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through.
  10. Remove the skillet from the oven. Sprinkle the Gruyere cheese over the meatballs and onions.
  11. Return the skillet to the oven for 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can caramelize the onions for a longer period.
  • Serve with crusty bread to soak up the sauce.
